Larch
Durability
Class 111 (based upon average of European and Russian Larch). Experience has shown that Siberian Larch is much more durable. Siberian larch is very resinous and extremely hard, making it one of the toughest and most durable softwoods in the world.
Physical properties of Siberian Larch Timber
The timber varies in colour from light yellow to orange - gold - brown heartwood with a strong grain pattern. The trees are very slow-grown due to the extreme climate, resulting in tight growth rings and fine grain. Owing to its slow growth rate it has an unusual durability for a softwood with a density of 700 - 800 kg.m3 - dry wood. Unlike the British larch, the knots in the Siberian species are light grey in colour and are less likely to fall out after drying and machining.
Larch facts
Sustainable/recyclable
Siberian Larch is harvested from mid-eastern Siberia. Approximately 2/3 of the Siberian forest area of 230 million hectares is grown over with Larch. Annual growth is greater than the annual felling programme.
The forestry resources of Russia are in excess of 1.18 billion hectares, annual growth is estimated at 800 million m3, allowable cut is 500 million m3, annual cut at present is around 100 million m3.
